One night in Egmar
-- (Terry Pratchett, Feet of Clay)
I spent the evening roaming the Minmatar Faction Warfare zone looking for the ever illusive 1v1s that I'm convinced the revived Rifter is capable of dominating.
The area was buzzing with activity, numerous small and large gangs all over the place, Amamake hot as hell and Santo "Pod Reaper" Trafficante lurking.
My recent experience with the Rifter has shown me it's a lot better than it was, but is limited to singular engagements but damn it I'm going out there and going to find my Nirvana.
So it was that with one or two random warps to various faction warfare plexes I tripped over two Cheetahs, very unlucky for them that I would exit warp right on top of them and disable their cloaking systems.
Killing cloakers is almost as satisfying as killing warp core stabbers.
After one such kill I warped back to the wreck to loot the cloak, when a Firetail frigate warps in, piloted by the skillful and dangerous Lhorenzho.
A quick look at the Firetail shows me it has artillery fit, with its superior speed this was going to be an interesting fight, it quickly starts to close range as I align out, my afterburner at full throttle, he closes.
50km
40km
30km
My afterburner cycle is about to finish, I overload and pull off a maneuver I haven't done in a while, not since the days of the static 2/10 in Gusandall.
With bits of metal straining all around me, the forces exerted by the Crazy Ivan do almost as much damage to my Rifter as any weapon system, I'm launched in a direct collision course with the Firetail.
20km
10km
Scram and web kick in, the added range my guns now had wouldn't help me in this fight so I had to get close and mitigate some of the incoming damage, weapons systems overloaded I go to work on Lhorenzho's Firetail, his damage is impressive and so is his tank, it's neck and neck, both our repair systems fighting to repair the chunks of armour being torn out of our ships, he's still significantly faster than me and starts to get range where his artillery starts hitting me harder.
With my repper out of nanite paste his armour crumbles, my own is close to evaporating under the massive volleys of his artillery.
I try to orbit, minimising the impact of his salvos, using the greater tracking of my guns to finish him off.
I'm rewarded with a satisfying explosion as Lhorenzho's Firetail illuminates the Egmar system
A great fight and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
I seem to be having an issue with my modules burning out, cost me a Police Comet kill with him at 3% structure, but the pilot was gracious enough to offer a 1v1 against my Rifter, we did so at a deep safe and this time I managed not to melt everything and win. Another good fight.
Also just lost my Astro, took on a Hyperion in an anomoly... Neuted, tackled and dead :(

Jams and Preserves
-- (Terry Pratchett, The Truth)
Some folk will go to extra-ordinary lengths to get a kill.
Editors note: The game logs have been edited as there was a lot of frustrated button pushing by Kane which made them pretty much unreadable, the important information has been left intact.

One of the Dramiel pilots from last night is spotted entering Eifer in a Republic Fleet Firetail, I board Sgt Angua and head on over the the plex as I'm certain he is back for revenge.
Sure as a bear shits in the woods, he enters Gusandall and warps straight to the plex. He lands, I target and the fight kicks off...

When the mad man is grinning... It's time to go
"Nac mac Feegle wha hae!"
- -- (Terry Pratchett, Carpe Jugulum)
"A Republic Fleet Firetail you say?"
...
"In my plex?"
...
"Of course I'm going to bloody kill it"
News of a faction frigate reaches my ears, the very fact it is from a faction makes it a very tempting target and one which I can not and shall not refuse. Normally in this kind of situation where there are trespassers in the local 2/10 I would grab Maurice™ my Jaguar plex hunter but I felt like playing with my quarry and took Going Postal™ for a spin in the black.
I undock and warp to the gate, hitting the scan button to make sure he's still there, I land on the gate and activate it, get launched deep into the plex and wait the agonizing seconds until I land.
He's not in the first pocket, damn. It's at this point I realise I made a mistake, I had no keys for the deeper plex gates. So... I warp to the station, dock, grab some keys and undock.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
Except this time I head towards the second gate and activate it, it launches my Rifter into the second pocket, I don't expect to see the Firetail there as he'll be moving on to the third pocket, I make a beeline for the gate, activate it, all the while mashing that scan button in the direction of the third pocket. He's in there alright and about to have a nice suprise.
I burst out of warp with the Firetail about 40km away, I curse my luck but no matter, afterburner glows as I start to close. The distance closes very quickly as I notice the Firetail is coming for me. Most excellent, not what I would do if I saw myself coming towards myself but I imagine his thought process went a bit like this:
"Oh look, a Rifter. How'd he get in here? He's all flashing red, oh look, a bounty, that's nice, I could do with some ISK, I'll just kill him and carry on in here"
Now, his first mistake was not warping out as I came in, his second mistake was engaging me. This is what I wanted and I think if he saw my mad grinning face in my pod he would have not made either the first or the second.
Once in range of my tackling gear I locked him up and activated the scram and web. Now that he wasn't going anywhere I punched the guns and rocket launcher and they started to have their way with the Firetail. The rather beautiful ship, in my eyes, no match for the sheer awesomeness of my Rifter. The Firetail exploded, raining bits of debris against my hull, it brought joyjoy feelings to my black heart but I was not done. The pod was locked and scrambled and as I was in a good mood I opened comms with the stricken Pilot.
"5mil and you can go on your merry"
"OK" he replied and a quick glance at my online banking showed he deposited the required amount in to my account.
"Have a nice day" I said as I disengaged.
I docked up and got ready to go out, I was going Ice Skating
You wouldn't believe the things I have to do to get a fight?
Had a great time at the ice rink last night and had spent most of the day doing things that needed doing but I was ready to take Going Postal™ out for a spin. I headed to Eifer and warped to my usual spot and proceeded to scan. There was a Rifter about so I started the hunt, I narrowed him down to the V cluster, warped to the planet and started scanning the belts. He was at a safespot as none of my small arcs found a hit at a belt or moon, so I warped to a belt to see if he would try and hunt me.
Negative on the being hunted scenario but have no fear, a Thrasher has warped into the first belt.
This was going to work out nicely I thought to myself, grinning at the prospect of a combo meal. I warped into the first belt and as expected was greeted by the Thrasher, he was 30 clicks away but no bother, I would just mosey on over and introduce myself. I engaged the Thrasher with all the violence my Rifter could muster and soon he was in danger of exploding, it was at this point my cunning plan bore fruit as the Rifter warped in and engaged me.
Awesome, I finished off the Thrasher as I locked the Rifter, who was closing fast, my tackling gear switching to him as soon as the Thrasher exploded.
"Let's dance my friend" I said to no-one in particular as the Thrasher pilot warped his escape pod out of the belt. Rifter vs Rifter, the truest test of a pilots skills and abilities. Unfortunately for the pilot of the other Rifter, mine have been honed in combat for years. The very thought of combat, win or lose is what I live for, the hunt being the blood that drives my heart.
The Rifter hit armour, my shields long ago having been stripped by the Thasher.
"Good armour" I thought to myself as round after round, rocket after rocket smashed into it. This guy was either really skilled or had an oversized armour plate. No matter, more armour just meant more fight and boy was I having fun.
But like all things in life, good times must end and for my opponent it must have been demoralising as his ship exploded in a beautiful firework display, his escape pod being locked and scrambled before he had a chance to react, waking up in a cloning vat is not pleasant but best he gets used to it now.
I scooped all the loot and my trophy corpse and warp to a safespot to wait out my Criminal timer, a mad grin across my face as a cunning plan works out beautifully.
I head back to Gusandall pleased with my nights work, short, but oh so very sweet.

Getting back in the saddle...
Pushing back the analysis of my mistakes I board "The Last Continent" a Republic Fleet Firetail, a mistake by Keira whilst out shopping one night. I was looking to do a spot of solo hunting and headed out to my favourite haunt. I was to be sorely disappointed as Eifer was devoid of anything important. There was a Hound in the belts but it was hiding using its cloak.
A fair few minutes past and I received a call from a friend, Viper Sam asked if I'd like to go roaming. I agreed, I needed action and playing hide and go seek with a Hound wasn't it.
I headed home to get "Karma" the second iteration of a very succesful Hurricane battlecruiser.
We went on our merry with very little being reported by our scout. We did eventually trip over a Raven who jumped into us and we snagged the pod for good measure. I love the sound that a pod makes when it pops, it's addictive.
We carried on our merry way and eventually got some action in Bosena, we engaged a Hyperion on the station but he docked as his tank broke, we then moved around system as there were two other gangs, one with fast cruisers and interceptors and another with commandships and a Falcon Recon. We engaged the Astarte, Sleipnir, Megathron and Falcon at a planet but lost our Falcon and the one of our Hurricanes, this effectively took the rest of us out the fight so we disengaged and warped out to a belt to regroup. I landed in the belt and was joined by the cruiser/interceptor gang, I got a point on a Thorax and vapourised the gank fit cruiser in seconds before the rest of our gang exited warp,, the delightful squish of the pod followed. The Thorax's support left the scene quicker than they arrived.
It was getting late so we headed home, a very uneventful night.
Sitting in station intel arrived of a juicy gang in Eifer, we managed to put together a small gang and go spoil for a fight. We took slightly too long and by the time everyone was ready there was little left of the hostiles as it seemed they went back to highsec, there was a report of a Raven still in system along with some other bits and bobs, they were all at different safes so probing would be needed, Keira was only one jump out and moved in, within seconds of dropping the probe she got a hit and we vectored in on the Raven. It seemd the pilot was asleep at the helm and the mighty battleship's hull crumpled under sustained fire, his pod emergency warped out but Keira was on the case and soon he would wake up in a clone vat.
Heading home we found a Moros dreadnought on our home station and without second thought I engaged, I was bored and looking for some fun, I bumped him and he responded by locking me and webbing me, drones were deployed and started to eat my precious shields away. Karma perished soon after but it's not in my nature to not attack things, even if outmatched.
I just had to give it a go :D

The Fifth Elephant
Eifer, a system I call my haunt, no stations and the entry system to a lowsec pocket in Heimatar.
It's like a home to me, I feel very comfortable here, more so than in any station system. It can also be very dangerous for the unsuspecting as it's neighboring highsec system of Emolgranlan can hide nasty suprises. The past eight months have brought me many good memories in Eifer and qite a few losses too but it's the first stop on any hunt I start. Tonight was such a night and as I sat above belt 1-1 I was at peace. I had undocked “The Lost Continent”, a Republic Fleet Firetail and decided to do some frigate hunting.
Now Eifer can either be feast or famine and tonight it was quiet to begin with, just the usual mindless zombie haulers moving back and forth appearing on my on board scanner. Eventually the monotony was broken by a Sacrilege Heavy Assault Cruiser. Now this particular ship is dangerous but the Firetail is quick and nimble, the Sacrilege would struggle to hit me, but by the same token it would be nigh impossible for me to do any significant damage to it. I did decide to have some fun with the HAC though as I was bored and there was nothing more enticing in system.
I warped in above 1-1 at 400km, the HAC was in the belt and I noticed he had increased speed and was closing on me, ok, let's see what you've got. By the time he got within 100km of me I changed course to intercept, spiraling in I got within 25km and settled into an easy orbit, my velocity at 4km/s meant his weapons systems would struggle to hit me. He locked me and I returned the favour, he launched a flight of tech 2 Warrior drones, inty killers but experience kept me calm and I started to target them and fire on them. He recalled them and redeployed as is standard tactic in that situation, all the while me orbiting him, this went on for a few minutes with me destroying a few drones and him seemingly oblivious to my presence. Bored of this I broke orbit and disengaged, he left without uttering a word.
I went back to HQ, I was bored and was looking for something a bit more challenging. It's not often I have the time to hunt on a weekend so I was looking to make the most of it.
I boarded “The Fifth Elephant” a Sleipnir class Command Battle cruiser and undocked, there were some friends out front the station, doing some testing, I joined in some tank testing which was good for me as this was the first time I had undocked the Sleipnir, I have never used an active shield tank before and this was a good way to find out how it fared, I took fire from two Megathron Battleships and was quite happy with the results.
After the Megas went there way I undocked once again to be greeted by a Scythe cruiser, it just sat there saying “Shoot me” so naturally I did, first blood for the Sleip, not the most glamorous of kills but sometimes a kill is a kill.
A short while later a call came over an intel channel of a Drake and Vagabond in Eifer, finally, a little action, I undocked and made best speed to the system, Jaxx Blackfox in a Megathron and general dogzbody in a Vagabond were engaging in belt 1-1, I set the nav coordinates into the ships computer and entered warp, in mere moments I burst out of warp right on top of the Drake, the target Vaga was nowhere to be seen, I initiated lock and primed all weapons systems, lock resolves and my 425s go to work. The fight didn't last long.

Short and sweet, the target Vagabond warped in one more time but left in a hurry when he saw he was outmatched.
Minutes later I received intel of two Ruptures, a Thrasher and a Rifter sitting on the Eifer gate in Gusandall, I was docked at the time and decided to take Karma for a spin, the Hurricane quickly becoming my favourite ship, mixing tremendous firepower with a tank that can deal with most situations. I warped in on the gate and the marks were still there, I engaged, instantly drawing sentry fire along with the attentions of all four pilots, both Ruptures went down to Karma's guns all the while taking a tremendous pounding from the gate sentries. Deciding that the Thrasher and Rifter weren't worth losing a ship to I warped out with 50% hull integrity, a close call but well worth two kills. Soon afterwards I docked up to have my hangar crew inspect and repair the damage, it would take them a while to get the dents knocked out so I boarded the Sleip once more.
Keira during all this had positioned herself in Eifer, she reported that the Drake pilot from earlier was back in system, in a new Drake, accompanied by his Vagabond friend. I forwarded this information to an intel channel to see if anyone wanted to join the hunt, the lack of response unusual I decided to chance my luck. Keira had been using recon probes to try and vector in on there position and was getting good hits but they kept moving.
I had by this time jumped into system, perhaps showing my hand but nonetheless I was going to see this through. I got a call from Prediction Pain, an acquaintance I met in Independence, he notified me of his presence in system piloting a Falcon Recon Cruiser, a rather nasty ECM boat, one I personally have no love for but would probably need the assistance of in this engagement.
Keira's tenacity payed off as she had managed to probe out the marks safespot, moving into a position to allow me to warp right on top of the duo. I engaged my warp engines and the massive bulk of the commandship was flung though space. I burst out of warp right on top of them, initiating lock on both the Drake and Vagabond. I primaried the Drake and engaged all systems on it. I was taking an amazing amount of damage from the pair and lucky for me Prediction had got the go signal in the fleet channel and had joined the party, the Falcon locking both targets and jamming them to Jita and back. It was fortunate for me that he did as my tank was taking strain, the extra large shield repairer chewing through cap like a fat kid at a buffet, the cap booster struggling to keep up. The drakes shields were failing under the assualt of my guns and when they did it was over in the blink of an eye. The Vagabond took this as his cue to leave but left us with the spoils of a good fight.

Thanks to Prediction for the assistance, much appreciated.
Later on I decided on some good old fashioned Rifter Violence and managed to pop a Thrasher who was hunting Angel Cartel ships in the belts.
I then spotted something very curious on my scanner, an Exquror class cruiser and Rifter in a belt, I was intrigued and set my sights on the pair, bursting out of warp I was greeted by the sight of the Exquror mining... yes... I said mining, with the Rifter as a sort of security, oh well, I primed my tackling equipment, locked the cruiser and closed in, the Rifter locked me and started firing, so I returned the favour, keeping the warp disruptor on the cruiser as that was my prize, the Rifter started venting gas into space as it's hull was breached and it decided that it was time to leave, leaving me all alone with the now defenseless mining cruiser. It was a bloodbath as it's hull split in two and exploded, my targeting systems quickly locking the escape pod and my guns liberating the body inside.
I was later convoed by the Rifter pilot and we had quite an amicable chat on Rifter fittings and tactics for lowsec survival. He expressed an interest in Piracy which is always good, it's always good to have new faces trying to make a name for themselves.
Heading home I reflect on a quiet night but one where getting back the sharpness of solo hunting felt great. I docked at HQ and the Hangar chief notified me that Karma was back to fully operational status, I dismissed the crew for the night and headed to the corner of the hangar where my bunk welcomed me, my eyes barely open as exhaustion overwhelms me.
The world fades into darkness

Firetail of Doom
All I remember is walking into Independence bar and it all went fuzzy as I imbibed some concoctions which are or bloody well should be illegal in some systems.
The cold hangar floor sobers me up enough to recognize I didn't quite make it to my bunk.
Oh well, nothing clears the head like a spot of Piracy. Looking around the hangar my eyes fall on the Republic Fleet Firetail that Keira bought, the name "The Lost Continent" carefully inscribed on the side. Oh well, might as well use it or as I assumed, suicide it.
It had already tasted action the previous night as I engaged a Breacher class frigate. The Breacher didn't offer much resistance and I added another meat popsicle to the collection.
Undocking and heading to my favourite haunt, there were reports of a Rifter gang in the area, maybe if I was lucky I would run into them.
A Bellicose cruiser had appeared on scan and I quickly narrowed it down to a belt, bursting out of warp, my warp disruptor primed I engaged the Minmatar cruiser. The shield systems of the Belli melted and soon it was in armour. I made a mistake at this point and drifted out of warp disruption range and the Bellicose pilot took this failure on my part as his que to leave, which he did. A missed opportunity and showed me I was rusty, need to hunt solo more often, sharpen up so that such mistakes don't happen again.
A few minutes later a report came in of the Bellicose pilot being destroyed sitting on a gate. Oh well, somebody got the kill.
Later on I spotted another Bellicose on scan, a different pilot but he was accomponied by two Rifter pilots. Oh well, best to give it a shot I thought as I threw the Firetail into warp. Entering the belt I found one Rifter and the wreck of the Bellicose, mmm. Time to crash the party, I engaged the Rifter and pretty soon he was deep into armour. Just then another Rifter burst out of warp and I thought they were together but the latest addition to the tango engaged the first Rifter. The first goes down and it's just the last and I, I naturally engage and soon another wreck is added to the belt. Quickly looting I got out of the belt as some Angels were trying to introduce me to the cold black.
Fortune smilled on me as I got another crack at the first Bellicose that escaped due to my mistake but this time he went down hard to the combined firepower of my Firetail and Deathstar's Vengeance. Satan's Minion lost his pod too for his trouble.
Hanging out in system I spotted a Caracal on scan, he was sitting in a safespot so I would be hard pressed to engage. Just then Deathstar, a pilot from Mean Corpv gave me a call saying he had scanned out the Caracal and asked if I wanted to help take it down, Death was in a Falcon so his offensive capabilities were very low. I of course said yes and primed my nav systems to Deathstar's position. Bursting out of warp right on top of the Caracal must have given its pilot an emergency pants moment. I engaged, Warp Disruptor active, guns engaged, and missile batteries firing, settling into an orbit around the Caracal. A moment later I lost lock and the Caracal warped away.
"AAAAAAAARG STABS" I yelled at no-one in particular, I kicked out in frustration and think I may have broken something. Oh well, I had spotted a Rifter on scan and decided to take my frustrations out on the poor pilot.
I came out of warp right on top of the pilot and opened up with everything, soon his ship was reduced to a wreck, his pod was snapped up for good measure (He was a very young pilot but I wanted to kill something and this is as close to kicking a puppy as it gets in this universe)
Later in convo with the pilot after he recloned in a station many systems away, I found out he had just spent his entire fortune on implants, oh well, I'm a Pirate, not the Salvation Army, I did give him some fitting tips and went on my merry.
Last mark of the evening was a Stabber pilot, I wanted another kill so vectored in on him and engaged, Deathstar had just come out of warp as the Stabber warped away.
"STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBS"
We got a second chance at him but it was futile as the cursed Warp Core Stabilisers would allow him to warp out at will, this time though he warped out and left system.
All in all, not a spectacular evening and the Firetail survives yet another night, wonder how long it will last. I dock at HQ and feel the hangover creeping up on me, probably a good time to hit the sack. I lie down, the darkness overwhelms me and I slink into a deep sleep.
Dreams of space and epic battles take over my consciousness.
